Save Money On Your Grocery Bill

Grocery shopping for a family is often a very expensive thing, especially as most families will go shopping for groceries once every week. If you are not able to go into the shop and do your grocery shop frugally you will without doubt end up blowing your budget and running up an over-sized bill fit for a king. So how can you start saving money on your grocery bill? It's easy really, a little motivation and guidance goes a long way.

Plan Ahead
Instead of going shopping without any idea of what you'll need for the week ahead you can very easily fall into the trap of over-spending on food and household goods. Rather than shopping on a daily basis, plan your meals ahead so that when you go to the store you know exactly what you need. This will also save you money on expensive takeaway foods from your local Chinese or pizza shop.
Set A Budget
There's little point trying to cut your grocery shopping bill down to size if you don't set a budget. Once you have planned your meals, allocate a sum of money to it. Take a pocket calculator to the store and add up what your spend will be. Do not be tempted to add in little treats as these will soon add up.
Look At The Lower Shelves
Food stores employ marketing gurus just to find out where a product sells best, and that is mostly on the eye-level shelves. If you want to start saving you've got to start looking down as this is where all the cheaper brands will be located in the hope that you don't find them.
Don't Take The Kids
As well as targeting the more expensive items at eye-level, a supermarket will try and tempt your kids with all sorts of enticing and expensive sweets. Leaving your kids at home will allow you to shop frugally without being interrupted to buy the latest and tastiest chocolate bar or cereal.
Shop With Cash
Don't take your credit card, shop with a wallet of cold hard cash. There is nothing like the feeling of handing over cash to make you save the pennies. Shopping with cash feels much more 'real' than paying by check or credit card, so you'll be less likely to blow your budget.
Shop Just Before The Store Closes
To save money on your grocery bill you'll need to change when you shop. Don't head out to shop in the middle of the afternoon, rather you should go in the evening. This is when the store must get rid of all perishable foods, which they mark down to move quick. You can then pick up the same fresh food for a lot less.
Take Advantage Of Offers
Supermarkets will often run promotions on certain items, such as 'Buy One Get One Free' etc. Take advantage of these to reduce your overall spend.
Use Coupons
Start collecting coupons that are redeemable at the store. Shop with these in mind so that you can save further on your budget.
