How To Conquer Debt
Being in debt is not nice, but neither is it something that you should be ashamed of as the average person nowadays has got some debt. The first step towards debt relief is admitting that you have a problem, rather than burying your head in the sand and ignoring it. Debt may not be the most pleasant thing, but simply ignoring it just doesn't work because it won't magically disappear.
- Realize What Your Situation Is & Prepare To Act
- now that you have realized that you are in debt and that it isn't going to vanish, you have to act. But before you take start to pay off your debt you'll need to do a little tidying up. Instead of paying out a lot of interest on your outstanding credit card balances, why not transfer to a 0 per cent card? It'll save you a lot of money that can be used to start paying back your debts. If you have multiple loans then why not consolidate them into one loan offering the lowest interest rate that you can find, but be wary of loans secured by your home.
- Cut Your Spending Back
- Actually, cutting your spending back is not enough - you need to be ruthless! Start with your variable monthly expenses such as your cable TV subscription and start to cancel them. You want to save as much money as you can, and if that means going without TV for a while then so be it!
- Notify Your Creditors Of Your Situation
- Now you should start to notify your creditors of your financial situation. It is best to write them a letter and inform them that you are finding repayments difficult. Make out a repayment schedule that suits you and negotiate over it with them until you reach a payment plan that suits both parties.
- Organize Your Repayments
- Some people like to feel like they are doing something quickly, so they start paying toward all their debts at the same time. While this may make you feel like you are getting somewhere, it is actually a very inefficient way to pay back your debt. The best thing to do is to start paying back the most expensive debt first, while maintaining your minimum payments to other debts. Once you have cleared your largest debt you will notice a large saving on interest which can then be channelled directly back into paying off the next largest debt. This is known as Snowballing.
- Seek Advice
- Remember, being in debt is nothing to be ashamed of. In order to keep yourself motivated why not seek out some free debt help. There are lots of debt counselling services available. Make sure that you use a free debt counsellor rather than one charging a rate, the last thing you need is more expenses.
