How To Get A Better Deal From Your Creditors
When you are in debt it doesn't help to have your creditors calling you and hassling you for repayments that you simply can't afford. This is a bad situation to find yourself in, so the best way out of it is to negotiate directly with your creditors and debt collection agency in order to get a better deal out of them.
For those living in the United States you can request that a pestering debt collector stops calling you at home or work by referring them to The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which should stop their calls. But if you are outside the USA then your best avenue is to start the process of negotiation. Here's what you can do to get a better deal.
- Try To Get A Little Leeway
- Contact all of your creditors and ask them for a little leeway so that you can maintain your repayments in a reliable fashion. Inform them that you are having problems with the repayments and that rather than missing a repayment you would rather continue with your minimum repayment schedule. Point out that you intend to fully repay your debts. Also, you should ask that they freeze any interest repayments in the meantime.
- Don't Worry If You Get A Bad Response
- When you contact your creditors you will find that some are willing to be flexible, after-all they want you to stay with them as a paying customer. But you will inevitably come across some credit controllers who take a strong stance against your proposals, perhaps going so far as to threaten court proceedings. In this case you need to write back to them and politely inform them that in the event of the case being referred to a court of law that you reserve the right to use copies of all correspondence as evidence. If the case does go to court and you come prepared with all your letters etc the court will more than likely recognize that you took a responsible and pro-active stance. Because of this they are more likely to order repayments according to your plan.
