What Not To Do When In Debt

People who are already in debt are typically under a lot of stress because of the constant knowledge that they owe a lot of money, interspersed with frequent reminder calls from their creditors or debt collection agents. However, many people in debt make their problem even worse by spending more money and adding to their existing debt.

By following a few simple rules you can help yourself from falling deeper into debt. There are things that you should definitely not do when in debt - don't even think about it! Check out this list of things that you should be aware of.

Beware Of Borrowing More Money
If you are in debt already then the last thing that you'll want to do is to borrow even more money. Be very wary of taking out a loan that is secured with your home because if you can't keep up with the repayments you could end up losing all your money and your home!
Don't Become Complacent
Even though it isn't a pleasant thought, you must never forget about your debt. Putting it to the back of your mind may give you a brief respite, but your debt still exists and the longer you take to address it the worse it gets. Get in touch with your creditors and explain your situation. Send them details of your personal financial situation and how much you can afford to repay.
Prioritize Your Debts
You need to prioritize your debts so that you can target the most expensive debt. Paying off your most expensive debt first frees up more money (saved from interest) that can be ploughed back into repaying your next biggest debt. This process, known as Snowballing, is the best way of clearing your debts.
Maximize Your Income
Ask yourself if you can claim any state financial assistance such as any tax credits. If so, claim them so that you have some spare cash to work with. Make sure you use your spare cash to repay your debt and not as spending money!
Contact A Debt Counsellor
It's good to talk to someone about your problems, after-all a problem shared is a problem halved. If the debt counsellor charges a fee then stay away, the last thing you need is an extra expense. Search for a free debt counsellor who can offer real help and advice.
