When To Buy, Hold Or Sell Stocks

One of the secrets of successful stock investments is knowing when to buy, hold or sell your shares. You should realise that an investment in the stock market is primarily a long term investment. A typical share will need a considerable amount of time for it's value to rise to the point where selling will actually earn you a return on investment after fees and taxes are paid out. So, when do you buy, hold or sell? Here are some tips to help you decide.

Think Long Term
Stocks are a long term investment, so there is very little point in checking the value of your shares each and every day. If you were to change your focus from short term returns to a long term investment you can check monthly and send more time analyzing stocks that are worth buying into. Ignore the daily fluctuations of the stock market and concentrate on identifying trends.
When Will You Need Your Money Back?
When you buy a stock you should consider the length of time you are prepared to wait before you would be willing or able to sell for a profit. Be crystal clear in your own mind when you want a return before investing.
Establish The Stocks' Performance History
Before you buy you should establish a solid performance history for the stock you are tracking. Doing so will help you make a much more informed investment. If it hasn't been performing well or it turns out that it is on a downward trend, then don't buy.
Identifying Trends
The stock market is notoriously volatile, so rather than concentrating on the daily fluctuations of the stocks you should try and identify trends. If you can find a trend in where the market is going you stand a much better chance on earning a solid return on your investment.
