General Holiday Money Saving Tips
For many families the annual vacation is the most expensive 2 weeks of the year, except for Christmas. There is a tendency to go away and spend wrecklessly as this is usually associated with having a good time. But this doesn't have to happen, you can have an even better time on holiday by managing your spend and planning ahead.
Too often we go away with our credit card and just spend like mad, then come home to a gigantic credit card statement. Avoiding this is relatively simple, it just requires a little bi of foresight and some determination to curb your spending. Here are a few tips to help you keep the costs down.
- Planning Ahead To Save Money
- One of the very best ways that you can save money, lots and lots of cold hard cash, is to simply plan ahead. Book your flights, accomodation and car hire well in advance of the date. Doing so will mean you beat the rush and the inevitable price increases of peak season.
- Be Flexible, Avoid Peak Season
- If you can be flexible then avoid peak season as this is when the prices for package holidays, flights, accomodation, car hire and even food goes up. If you have got kids then why not try and avoid the major holiday weekends, take an odd week where demand is low. Avoiding peak season will save you a lot of money simply because demand for flights and accomodation is much lower. Therefore, travel agents will offer much cheaper deals to try and move inventory.
- Use Cash
- Okay, so you've heard this hundreds of times before - but that's because it works! When you spend with cash you will be much less likely to hand over all that money for something you don't really need. With a credit card you can't really appreciate the cost and so you'll probably just go ahead and buy it. On holiday avoid using your credit card and use cash!
- Eat In
- It is very tempting to go and eat at a different restaurant every night while on holiday, but that will just mean you come home home to a big bill. Eating out is expensive (Chinese one night, Thai the next, maybe some Italian the following night) so shop locally and eat in as much as you can.
